Our wedding day ~ June 26, 1999

My sweet husband recently played me this Francesca Battistelli song, “Angel by Your Side.” I’m a huge F.B. fan! I was hooked on her music at “Free to be Me” and have loved pretty much every song since then. “Angel by Your Side” quickly made my top 10 list. Here’s why …

“Pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” warns Ecclesiastes 4:10.

Have you noticed that God often “helps us up” by placing just the right person at our side at precisely the right moment? That’s been my experience. I’m not always as keenly aware of what God is up to in the moment, but usually at some point I catch on. When I finally notice that once again He has planted just the right person in my life for that moment, and I pause to glance in His direction and whisper, “Well played, Lord! Thanks!” I imagine my Father winking at me as though He’s pleased I realized that He knew my need and met it … again.

We all have some friendships which are meant to be temporary.  They come to their natural end, not because of dissatisfaction or lack of interest but simply because the road has run out or turned a corner.  They get us through a particular stretch of road, and for that we can be grateful.  But they are friendships of the road.  I believe these are divine appointments.  I believe that God divinely appointed most of the people in my life to “help me up” at precisely the right moments.

Last week Mike, the kids, and I were reconnected with friends who were “friends of the road.” God put them in our lives when we were navigating the early early years of marriage and parenthood. You may or may not know that Mike didn’t just marry me 13 years ago, he “married” Kadi too so we had a few more little things to navigate than many. Our friends had a son Kadi’s age, twins two years younger (one of which has a serious heart condition), and an infant. We walked some difficult roads together and then … life happened and took us in different directions for nearly 9 years. No dissatisfaction. Simply life happening. And here we are … reconnected. It makes me wonder what God is up to.

The beauty of having an angel by your side, is that you get the opportunity to be the angel by someone else’s side.

Do you recognize that God has placed someone in your life for just this stretch of road? Do tell! (I’m serious. Write a comment below. I’d love to hear how He is meeting your needs with angels by your side!)

If you pause long enough to notice that God ~

… asked that friend to send you a passage of Scripture that she’s praying for you …

… arranged for you to meet the woman this week who is right now walking the same path you walked 20 years ago, giving you the opportunity to be her encourager …

… orchestrated the good news to come through a friend moments after a disappointment from an acquaintance …

~then stop now. Glance in the direction of your Father and whisper a heartfelt, “Well played, Lord! Thank you!”
